Would you sign a price that came from nowhere?
No number is invented. What was assumed is written down, a choice in your words is read, and a stage is done when you say so.
The challenge
Software that makes numbers up asks you to. A price that came from nowhere is worse than no price, because you will sign it. A quantity nobody stated, a rate nobody set, an assumption nobody wrote down: each is a place the job can go wrong without a record of why.
Why Structa
It picks only from a fixed list of work and never writes a number you did not; the price is arithmetic on published rates and your own, and every assumption is written down and said to the client. A choice in your message, a walk-in shower, is read from your words rather than assumed. If a line cannot be priced it says so on the quote instead of dropping off it. As the job goes, a stage is done when you mark it, and the payment that follows is the one on the quote: nothing appears that was not agreed.
On one job
What the bathroom job assumed, as written on its thread:
- Wall height assumed 2.4 m — say if the ceilings are higher
- Shower valve assumed exposed (surface-mounted): say if it is concealed in the wall
- Floor assumed: tile
- The floor tiles stop at the shower tray, assumed 1 × 0.8 m
- The heated towel rail assumed fed from the heating on two 15 mm tails run in the pipe boxing at first fix: say if it is electric
- Half the wall area the old tiles come off assumed to need plaster patching: say if the plaster behind them is sound
- The underfloor heating mat assumed under the open floor only: the bath (1.7 × 0.7 m) and the shower tray (1 × 0.8 m) taken off
- The house assumed lived in during the work with this its only bathroom, so a WC for the household is priced (one hired unit, shared with the site where the job hires one): say if there is another bathroom
- The shower waste assumed a 3 m run to the stack: say if the stack is beside it
- 4 m of pipe boxing assumed, round the soil stack and the pipework
- We've assumed the soil stack stays in place.
- One door opening assumed in the room (taken out of the wall tiling, and of the skirting run where the room has one)
